Newpoint Technologies, Inc., a leading supplier of Satellite Network Management Systems, introduces the second generation of its Mercury remote site managers. “Since the introduction of Mercury three years ago, we have seen increased market demand for a more economical and intelligent solution for managing remote sites. With the introduction of the second generation Mercury, we have significantly reduced the cost of managing these assets while increasing the capabilities of the Mercury unit itself” says Wally Martland, General Manager of Newpoint.
Mercury contains a fully functional version of Newpoint Compass software, packaged in a 1 or 2U rack-mount enclosure. Available configurations include Flash Memory or a Hard Drive. The base-unit includes four serial ports, and is upgradeable to twenty ports for managing serial equipment. Mercury is also fully capable of transmitting and receiving SNMP traffic.
Mercury has been specifically developed for managing remote sites and allows for primary and multiple back up communication channels with the network operations center via dial up connection, leased line, satellite overhead channel, LAN or WAN etc. Its unique replication feature ensures data integrity and delivery, and includes such important features as data compression, and storage of status changes, alarms, and events in the case network connection is lost.
Unlike many remote site managers, Mercury has local intelligence and scripting capabilities allowing operators to set up auto-recovery routines in the case of system failures. The Mercury unit itself has a watchdog which will reboot the system in the event a software process fails.
